Variations on this idea have been around ever since astrophotography
was invented. My favourite one is to use a zoom with a decent range,
say 35-135 for instance, set low ISO, say 200; defocus the stars so you can see a small disc, trial and error short equal length exposures, with
just enough time between exposures to zoom in in equal steps, so that
instead of the fan like appearance, you end up with each star looking
like a series of cylinders of increasing diameter. Each diam. cylinder having a different shade of it's colour. It will take a few tries
to get it right, but the end result is quite unusual, and, of course also
highlights the star colours.
