I like your suggestions about some plumbers tape around the camera fitting.
As for the filter wheel - agree, the supplied screws and washers are sub-par. I've got a set of Filter Centering Masks on the way from these guys -
LINK They were recommended on a thread from Cloudy Nights - might solve your artifact problem as well.
