Yes Warren,a prime lens nearly always produce better quality images than a zoom.Those lenses you have been give will give you some great results.
Both primes and zooms have strengths and downsides,It really comes down to each individuals' main area of photography,every one will have a couple of zooms-I love using my 17-55 F 2.8 it covers a large area of different photography.But when I want to follow my own main area of interest in photography-birds,wildlife and planes.I use the 400 L-f 5.6 prime.
There is another choice of a similar lens the 100-400,its a zoom and very good,it has a lot more general use than my 400 L prime.But when I decided between the two,I choose the prime as it was much lighter,and I new I would always be at the 400 end.So ultimately it comes down to what people want to do in their photography as to what choices they make.But primes do give beautiful results and the expense of range of focal lengths in the one lens.
