I use the sticky back felt used for furniture sliders , its cheap and comes in many sizes from Bunnings . These are soft and strong , greyish/brown in colour.
The best one for rings is the squares , about 150mm x 150mm and just cut strips the width of your rings , put as many layers on as necessary to make the rings tight on the tube .
