My obs is the old Macedon Ranges Observatory site....closed down a few years ago after the lost an overseas contract apparently.
The opening mechanism is basically a 1/4hp motor, wire rope and pulleys. Very simple but bloody hard to explain! I’ll try and get some pics tomorrow which should give some ideas.
Basically motor turns on, rolls roof until it hits a stop switch. All done via a relay setup so it can easily be controlled remotely if needed.
