Hi Bob,
I think it is always a good idea to try some terrestrial shots first. This way you can get an idea of the focus position, software, balance and so on all when there is good sunlight. Next I would try at night in the backyard and shoot anything, even just some stars.
Then when you have all the issues sorted, off to your favourite imaging site.
