I found that by adding a filter of some form into the train when using the ND3.8 baader film it helps quite a bit and you can regain more control over the exposures.

Personally I use a clip in astronomik OIII filter but a solar continuum should do the trick too.
Often people use a UV/IR cut filter but unless the dslr is modded it already has one so adding another wouldn't do a great deal more but it would at least get you a bit more control with the exposures.
