Sunset on Mauna Kea

I'm travelling with the family at the moment and joined a tour to the Mauna Kea observatory complex on the summit of Mauna Kea, Big Island Hawaii. I ran off a number of shots around sunset and this was my pick of the images. The two round domes on the right are the Keck telescopes operated by Caltech and University of California. The observatory on the left is the Subaru telescope operated by Japan.

The summit where the observatories are located is at a height of 4,200 metres above sea level. Because of the altitude it is necessary to stop at the visitors centre on the way up (@ 2,800 metres) to avoid too many ill effects from altitude sickness. It is worth the trip though as the views are stunning and to just be in the presence of these advanced facilities is awe inspiring.

I wasn't able to add a thumb nail to this post a I am doing it all from my iPad, however I did manage to upload a copy to Astrobin.
