TDI - aka drift scan imaging has been around for a while - http://www.driftscan.com/ is one example.
The technique has not taken off for capturing dim objects as you would need multiple drift passes to build sufficient signal thus its not seen as a replacement to continuously build pixel charge through RA motion w/ guiding etc. Still, TDI is can work well for photometry.
