Thanks guys, and for your question Marc, it seems that this has happened a couple of times on this fallen log, when one looks toward the end of that log and see two more trees that have actually died.
It appears that this particular tree started as a shoot off the fallen tree, the fallen tree provided nourishment until it established itself and then ended up a dried up log.
