Thanks for the suggestions guys. I've decided that I don't think I have the expertise to roll my own using motors and controllers bought as separate items. I've decide to go for a sliding gate opener with a pinion/rack drive. Just have to save a few more dollars as about $400 seems to be the going price for one.
