I have the nifty 50 and love it. Yes needs to be stopped down a lot for astro work. I use it for low light sports events and works a treat. I would like to get the 1.4 one of these days.
I'm not sure the FD will reach infinity when used with an adapter on an EF camera. I have a Minolta adapter and play with some nice prime lenses. However they are only any good for macro as they are too far out to reach infinity.
