Hi Colin,
For imaging, it depends how serious you are about it. Planetary you will be fine with the scope you suggest - just check out vonToms planetary stuff - great results.
Deep Space stuff its not ideal, but it is possible (see my flickr photos
http://www.flickr.com/photos/80336656@N07 ). i've had a bit of success with deep space but am now moving on to an equatorial platform for it as i've hit the upper limit of a dob and you are limited to the brighter objects.
