From what I have read on them over the years they were a bit of a Concorde moment, a technical wonder and pretty unarguably the ultimate evolution of the huge, four engine passenger aircraft but just like Concorde was the ultimate in "Faster" when the competition suddenly and successfully went with "More people at once" they seem to have been the ultimate in "Bigger" when the competition went with trimmer and more efficient and presumably cheaper to operate.
