An extremely great loss. Hawking's comments on the need for humanity to leave this planet seem to have fallen on many deaf ears in politics, as have his warnings about present-day indicators of the forthcoming (and catastrophic) greenhouse effect. A sad day - 76 years of age is not that old, but how he persevered through that crippling and debilitating disease for 50 years, is astonishing, not to mention his dazzling intellectual achievements.
