I wouldn't try running the power hungry stuff, like Peltier coolers, off USB power. The most you're likely to get from USB3 is 4.5 watts unless you have ports with some of the more exotic extensions to the spec (unlikely on an inexpensive device.)
I'm also a fan of the Startech hubs. The big advantage for me is that they will run off the 13.8V supply like everything else and don't need a separate 5V supply.
