It has been a week since I last had my EQ6 out, but for three nights in a row the stars chosen were Alpha Cent, Acrux and Achernar. Gave excellent results. Sure, the Synscan wanted Vega, but this star is behind the trees. I have my Synscan set to choose by magnitude and always get an object in the field of a 100x eyepiece. My polar alignment is generally within 00.30' each night - I carry the mount out and set it on a pier. Only doing visual.
You need to have the mount at start (park) in the neutral position - dec 90 and RA vertical - I do this by sight - and you can unlock and adjust for the first star if it is not in the finder - it makes no difference.
