Microsoft ICE is a free panorama stitching program that works very easily and very well.

Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop added panorama stitching a little while ago. Not bad, not great.

Sometimes one of these works when the others fail or present too much work. PT Gui often won't match skies with stars in them only - no landscape. So you have to manually select stitching points of commonality. A pain but not too bad. PT Gui offers a range of other improvements though.
