Greg - you have it the wrong way around Contrast Detect AF is what has been traditionally used in Compacts and mirrorless cameras, and is usually seen as slower, but more accurate, since it is using the sensor data itself to calculate focus. Phase detect is the sort of High speed AF that we are used to in SLRs and DSLRs, but relies on a separate AF array.
