To help with focus, crank up the ISO. This will make finding a star easier.
Depending on the camera, you may also be able to 'zoom in' on the live view screen.
I am pretty sure the 1100D can do this, but, can't check it just now. Let me know if you can't work it out, and will check on my 1100D.
