Yep it does work like that I use a modified ToUCam, allthough it's semi-retired now (I mostly do deep sky with a new CCD camera now)

You plug it into the focuser, find focus, and start playing with the settings such as exposure time and gain etc.
I use a 5x Powermate with mine for planetary and lunar imaging, I got vastly superior results with that over using my old Meade 3x barlow, there was just no comparison.
