You could try
Hugin for Windows. Use it all the time in Linux. It downsizes the images and then resizes to avoid memory problems, afaik.
Here is a
video showing how to use it for stacking. It's the Linux version but the interface isn't too different. In-fact, I recall copying the procedure from a Hugin Windows example. Google.
