my 55-200mm VR didnt have a filter so i bought a hoya UV... it actually made the image quality worse and changed the focus of the lens, it even added CA. it turns out that though it was a hoya which is a reputable brand it was the philipenes made one and not the japanese made one....
quality is going to play a big part so get the best you can afford!
