Point the scope to a very bright star, or the moon to try and focus to see how far out you are.
But i would say you will need a extender possibly. Are you using at least 2 seconds of exposure ? to start with. You may need to shorten the length too. How do you place the guider ?, is the eyepiece of the guider removed and you try and put the guider in place ?. Does it have a diagonal ?, etc.
An easy way to find the bright star or moon, is to place an eyepiece and centre the object, then swap out the eyepiece for the guider, then focus.
Do it during the day at an object far away.
