Well you know what I think Ian - the drop in filter was a pain in the A on my 40D. It created an internal reflection when used with both 50mm f1.8 and 70-200mm f4L lenses - and as such it couldn't be processed out as you might with flats etc. And, as stated in your opening thread, I replaced it with a 72mm screw in filter - I'm very happy with the performance now.
The only drawback is that I have needed to get 52-72mm and 67-72mm step up rings to attach the filter to each lens - but they were about $9 each through ebay.

I believe my problems came from the proximity of the rear elements of the camera lenses causing the reflections, and I think that scope users may not get this problem.
