Observations -- 9th August 2018

Hi All,

Been a while since I posted any observing notes here but motivated by having a new telescope to play with, I thought I’d share some with you.

These observations were made on the evening of 9th August 2018 at my home in the mid-west of NSW near Billimari – about 15km SW of Canowindra. Cool and clear evening, it was already down to 6 deg C by 7.30pm and by the time I wrapped up at 11.30pm it was 2 deg C. Seeing I’d rate at 6/10 for the whole night, a little light dew towards the end of the session and the SQML reading at commencement was a bit below par for this location at 21.52. It did get darker at the evening wore on and the Zodiacal Light dimmed and by 11pm it was 21.7 – still a bit below average but not too shabby. The gegenschein, around the Capricornus & Aquarius border became evident after 10.30pm I covered more than this in four hours but most of the time was treading well-worn paths to check-up on old mates.

This is a mod bright, lowish SB, good-sized eg elong in about PA 30. Oval outline about 2.75' x 1.5'. There is a mag 15.5 * embedded in the halo just a little to the W of centre. Lowish SB outer halo with diffuse edges brightening weakly to centre where there is a small, slightly brighter, not well defined core zone that seems to have a very faint *ar nucleus.

This eg seems fainter in the ep than the DSS would suggest. IN about PA 120 and appears as a small, mod faint LSB, 1.25' x 30" lens-shaped oval eg with very diffuse edges, brightens to a weak axial streak near centre though there is no apparent core-zone or nucleus visible.

-96 is a pretty bright, good S.B round eg. pretty easy to see, about 1.25' diameter growing mod end evenly to centre where there is a small, slightly brighter core zone that grows further to centre. There is a mags 14.5/15 pair just outside the halo to the NE, maybe 1' from centre. -44 is due W by about 8'.
-44 is a small to very small glow, set between 14th and 16th mag *s. Very LSB envelope with diffuse edges. Small mod brighter core with a sub-*ar nucleus. 7' NNE is -45.
-45 is a very, very LSB and very faint small glow with no structure. 30-odd arc sec across, round. No structure.

This eg is one field W of NGC 7096 (previous). Elongated, mod bright eg that is oval in outline, 3'' x 1.75' in PA 0, found with mag 14 and mag 15 *s that are just outside the extremities of the halo at the N and S ends. Good SB halo that brightens broadly and slightly to centre and nearer centre there is a large mod brighter, elong core zone containing a v/small non*ar spot nucleus.

-30 is a small mod faint, elong oval eg in about PA 120 1.25 x 40". Looks a little fainter than the DSS would suggest, quite LSB it points at a * to its ESE, mag 14 about 1.5' from centre. Possesses a small, slightly oval in the same PA slightly brighter core zone but no real nucleus. -921 is 5' away NNE.
-921 is 5' NNE of -30, small, faint, elong in PA 90 quite LSB smudge that isn't too hard to see brightening weakly to centre with no apparent structure.

-31 is a small round eg of pretty good SB, it has to its S mag 9 & 10 8s that make a long tri with -41 making the sharp point. It also has a mag 15 * just outside the halo to the N. Small, round 1.25' diameter weak-edged halo growing broadly and slightly to centre, At centre is a small, slightly brighter core/nucleus zone. ESO 145-21A is 7' NNW. There is a mag 15 * pretty much at the mid-point between the two eg. Is a small, elong haze growing weakly to centre about 30 x 20" with either a faint, mag 14 * superimposed dead centre or a relatively bright (given the size and brightness of the eg) *ar nucleus.

Well, whoever found this was certainly eagle-eyed. It presents as a thin slender, ephemeral, v/LSB slash of gossamer in about PA 135 imm SW of a mag 13.5 *. 50" x 5" of v/LSB gossamer, detectable with A.V and concentration. No central brightening apparent of other structure.

This is a nice, mod faint, lowish SB, diffuse looking oval eg in PA 75. Has a mag 14.5 * embedded in the NW flank of the halo and a mag 15.5 * on the edge of the halo on the SE flank at the W end of the halo opposite the other. Oval, probably 1.5 x 40" in PA 75, growing broadly and weakly to centre with no apparent core, zones or nucleus. Occasionally seems weakly mottled in the halo. Also, seems the halo is slightly narrower at the SW end compared to the NE end that is more rounded in outline.

Continues in Pt 2/
