I've never felt the need to use the mirror lock up option. I suppose it will depend on how secure your mount is. I think the tiny amount of vibration from the mirror going up in a 300sec exposure would be less than the variation in seeing that I get anyway.
I worry about using the live view option immediately before I start a shot anyway. Canon warns that it it will heat up with live view and I try to limit the amount of extra heat that is being generated in the camera.
Imaging last night at ~6degC sure had less noise than earlier in the year.
