Actually, the fundamental reason we stretch raw CCD images is to make them more like the naked eye would see them. A CCD has a linear response. Our eyes have a logarithmic response.
The "PixInsight" philosophy is that masking and manipulating is fine but the masks must be derived from the data. Painting a mask is a heinous crime
