I use the kernel filter in maxim to remove hot pixels and it does a pretty decent job.

Those darks are from some of the cleanest cameras around. Yes the hot pixels are considered noise. My old ST2000XM I originally thought was broken it was that snowy with noise. Thermal noise decreases by half by about every 6-7C drop in temp.
