There's a noticeable difference at the wide end between 17mm and 24mm. If you're often shooting in that 17-24mm range, I'd stay with the 17-55. If you're more using the mid to long end of the 17-55, 24-70 would be fine. Beware, it's heavier than the 17-55. Nicknamed "The Brick".

I haven't had or used the 24-105, but know there are plenty of guys here who have and swear by it. Gives more reach at the long end, but slower at f/4 instead of f/2.8. But the 24-105 has IS, the 24-70 doesn't.
Thank you Troy,I had not considered the weight of the 24-70,which would be a factor for me,as I would be carrying it around a fair bit in the bush.Still waiting to get report on 17-55 at present.Yes-the 24-105 does seem to have a very good wrap on this site-and not to bad a price.
