If the guide star moves too much during calibration, it is a sign of poor polar alignment. So I'd check that first.

If it's the 8" SCT, then I think a 1100D is probably a better fit with larger pixels, without losing much detail.

Update on my pier. I had it guesseted at the bottom and welded a heavier bottom plate and powder coated.
It is not a heavy duty pier by any standards, but certainly an improvement from the old pier...
