Ron, there was an article in the Sunday Telegraph today about how close the world came to nuclear war at that time. Apparently russian submarine commanders had authority to launch nuclear missiles, and one captain was prepared to do so and had the agreement of a party official on board. One other officer was against it and fortunately he prevailed.
So the world was effectively saved by one man!
THAT'S SCARY!!
