Go to where it is sunny and warm and take tshirts and shorts only! Where are you heading?

I hope the weather is kind to you!? Pack the gear first and don't worry about the rest! What equipment are you going to take?

Hi David,

Fill the tripod legs with helium.

Cut your toothbrush in half so the weight you save will afford the ability to carry a pair of IceInSpace Eclipse shades.

Take either toothpaste or sun block but use the one for both jobs.

Remove the video store card from the wallet. You won't be needing it.

Don't forget the old advice of the multiplicity of ways a single pair of underwear can be worn to last a four day trip.

Leave anything you can't buy there at home except for your fave clothes and shoes.
I used to travel o'seas about 8-10 times a year for meetings and such.
Only ever took 2 suits, three shirts and some chuddys.

I watched a segment of "Border" (I think) last night. A very obstinate woman would not pay $55 for 5Kgs of excess baggage. so she unpacked her bag (at the counter) and put 5Kgs of clothing on.

I am not sure whether she put her jammies under or over!

Do you think you could do that?

Barry

PS I recently came back from London with a 26Kg limit. We had stuffed our bags with all sorts of goodies so "she" was worried about excess baggage. I told her that I could not lift 26Kg let alone carry it. We weighed our bags at the check in 13Kgs each. B.

It works. The bloke who delivers gas cylinders here told me of a case where someone had a truck load of full hydrogen cylinders and he was under the weight limit. He dropped them off and collected the empties. On the way home the RTA stopped him and checked the load - he was overweight and so was fined.

Dave,

I want to see you getting off the plane in Cairns wearing every bit of clothing you have. You'd have them off quicker than the proverbial bride's nightie.

Don't you have any friends driving up?? I know of 4 cars but unfortunately none will go past your place nor be in Cairns when you need them. But if you want me to look after the Losmondy ..... :P

For the transit trip to Hawaii purchased a Lowepro backpack at the exact size limit for carryon baggage and everything heavy (scope, cameras, lenses, laptop and books all went in that. Only thing that didn't wa the tripod with the head detached which was cabon so was in the suitcase. I then easily packed clothes for 9 days in a small suitcase that only weighed 15kgs. The backpack was 16kgs!
Only drawback is if you have to wait at the airport, carting around a heavy back pack is a pain.

Excess baggage is pretty cheap if you pre-purchase it...at least it was with Qantas on my last flight from Melbourne to Perth. Is this an option or are they placing hard limits on these flights due to demand?

Pack the smallest , heaviest things in carry-on luggage, they never weigh carry-on but they will pick you up on size for carry-on.

Lets hope we're not all booked on the same flight. The aeroplane might struggle to get off the ground! ;)

My tip is to seriously consider what you really need to take and what your objectives are. As a seasoned traveller I know there is nothing worse than being bogged down by superfluous stuff. Be brutal, be honest and trim your baggage back to the bare bones.

I find that leaving my wife at home usually cuts the travel weight greatly.

Seriously, carry-on as much as you can get to fit in the overhead bins...

Just checked my records. It cost me an extra 40 bucks for 23kg on top of 66kg already allocated. Qantas, Melbourne -> Perth. Much cheaper than paying at the airport.

h0ughy
04-10-2012, 10:24 PM
he did that time, i had everything:rofl: i couldn't have done it without him, or for that matter my other astro partner in crime - Alan Meehan:thumbsup:
