Send a message from an iPhone to an iPhone and a non-iphone and I dont think it lets you know you have sent to paid service.

The world doesnt live on iMessage, much to Apples chagrin.

Just use email, it is easier and more universal across a multitude of platforms.

I don't send SMS and I don't even read them when they are sent to me. I think there are quite a few on my mobile still that have not been erased.

The mapping will improve. It's only just been released for goodness sake. Google has had quite a head start. I kind of agree that they should have offered their system as an addition, though, not a replacement to Google. Maybe their relationship with Google simply forced their hand. Easy for us to criticise without knowing the whole story I guess.

I find Google Maps to be notoriously out of date. Look up the new Sydney office of the Australian Astronomical Observatory at 105 Delhi Rd, North Ryde (which happens to be next door to my workplace), for example. Apple Maps shows the building complete with landscaping and car parks, Google Maps still shows a hole in the ground.

In the past I often preferred NearMap to Google Maps because it is frequently updated. It seems that in AU Apple may get their imagery from the same source.

Traffic information still seems to be better (in breadth) on Google Maps, and there is no such thing as Street View in Apple Maps at this point. We'll see how this new service will develop.

If you can track how much data bandwidth you spend on SMS messaging...and worry about it,...well... :shrug:

With a 500gb/mth plan to fool with I would consider it so close to zero that it's, for all intents and purposes, free.

If the average teenager with a phone sends 2,000 to 4,000 SMS messages per month (http://www.mobilemarketingwatch.com/average-teenager-sends-3339-sms-messages-monthly-average-teen-girl-sends-4050-10318/#) then at 20kb per message (high end - texting is usually shorter) then that's around 80Mb per month. Big deal.

You have 500g data plan on yr mobile phone, really?. Sheesh, that's a lot . That's a lot even for cable. Wouldn't 500g of 3G data cost a bomb?. Have I missed something?

I have a 1gig plan on my mobile. That costs enough. Cant imagine what a 500gig plan would cost.
My SMS cost is minimal as I don't use it much. It's just the point that the internet isn't free, we just pay for it at a different time to the phone.

No Fred - the point I was making is that most messages are sent from within reach of either home or work access to comms. Mobile data plans are certainly smaller - 3Gb/mth on my Telstra account - but even still, 80Mb/mth out of 3 - or even 1Gb, who really cares? This is for ultra-heavy users too!

Shows how we do things differently. 99% of the time my phone is not connected through a wireless network. Only at home and then only from my office. I would almost never sms from home though. No wireless at work so the 1 gig limit has to be rationed.

Terry, I have a 1.5 GB quota on my plan. I would consider myself a fairly heavy user of SMS. I have never, ever gotten close to that limit.

Well, apart from when I was without Internet when moving home.

I once sent 2,500 SMS (iMessage) on my plan in March, 2011 and even that didn't get anywhere near my 1.5 GB limit. This included sending photos/videos from a wedding.

iMessage is fabulous.
