View Full Version here: : David Malin Awards: which image got you an award
01-07-2012, 08:28 PM
This year I entered 14 images. 5 in DSO section, 5 in planetary narrow field. Two in solar system wide field and two in wide field imaging.
The two images that got up were
This image (http://paulhaese.net/Mosaicsolardisk15November2011.html) named Cycle 24
This image (http://paulhaese.net/Mosaicsolardisk6June2012.html)of Venus Transit.
I am amazed that two solar images attracted David's attention. I would have expected maybe one but not two.
So which images got you a gong?
01-07-2012, 08:42 PM
Congratulations Paul well done they are great images
i got a mention for my Venus transit video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uOo_bK7LoM&feature=youtu.be)and my daughter got one for her supermoon cruise (http://www.iceinspace.com.au/forum/attachment_browse.php?a=114727)shot . i am so proud of her.
Non for me Paul, but i can see why the Solar captures were a big hit awesome stuff, congratulations

Congratulations Paul and David (and daughter)!
I entered for the first time this year, and one out of the three I entered has won a prize. The image is star trails over Lake Wivenhoe (http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8023/7187640698_6867802afe_b.jpg).
01-07-2012, 09:05 PM
Hey well done guys. David do you have a link for the video?
Stephen that is a beauty of an image. Real symmetry there.
01-07-2012, 09:06 PM
BTW David what makes you think you got a mention. Maybe you won?
01-07-2012, 09:18 PM
Got two as well.
Not the one's I expected....but I should not be surprised, as David's choices are inscruitable at best :)
Might have to wait for the awards night....:D
01-07-2012, 09:34 PM
Come on mate cough up. Which ones? :)
01-07-2012, 09:35 PM
all it says is that we were both a prize winner - so i am assuming that is a mention?
see my first post above - i included links in that Paul
01-07-2012, 09:53 PM
Sorry missed that, the links did not show up when I first looked. Cool video and the super moon image is nice too.
01-07-2012, 10:01 PM
See you at Parkes. :)
01-07-2012, 10:14 PM
Congratulations everyone. :)
01-07-2012, 10:40 PM
Yay I got two in as well! Rapped again. I entered 10 images and one that got up I was a bit iffy about but looks like David liked it, but I thought another of mine was better in the symmetry category. Will be interesting to see how many commendations there are too (those done receive emails).
Well done everyone and I look forward to seeing everyone there in a couple of weeks!
02-07-2012, 07:13 AM
I'll be there too :-). I always get at least a partial surprise with which images get selected and which don't.. but (I feel) the details belong to the awards night. Looking forward to catching up with folks again.
02-07-2012, 09:09 AM
Reeeally? Noooo you won't be??? Fancy that
Nuttin for me again this year :tasdevil:, you familair faces must have a phsycic connection to David I recon
Well done all , I am sure there will be some cracking images ...and the odd eyebrow raiser too I am sure
02-07-2012, 09:29 AM
What? I could have sworn you would be in there this year. Two images I can think of were crackers.
If Wayne is going I might hitch a ride with him this time. It is a long way to go in a weekend though.
02-07-2012, 03:20 PM
Nothing for me this year. And I mean absolutely nothing! :D
Congrats all, great shots once again!
02-07-2012, 04:20 PM
Well deserved for braving the Yukon-cold if nothing else! :)
02-07-2012, 06:33 PM
I entered 6 images, several not published and got a nod for one.
Congrats to those who have gotten a win of some sort.
02-07-2012, 07:50 PM
Interesting spill so far. I wonder who will win the overall prize. Hmmmmm:question:
02-07-2012, 10:45 PM
I entered several, no wins - better luck next time perhaps.
Congrats to all those who did win :)
03-07-2012, 08:40 AM
Congrads everyone who got a email!
Managed one myself :) but not sure if I can get down this year.:(
03-07-2012, 06:57 PM
How many wins now Gary, 5 category wins listed on the site? Did you win any before 2006? You must be in a chance to obtain another category win.
03-07-2012, 08:52 PM
Good work guys!
First time entered this year and I managed to get a gong in the animation category. Very happy.
Unfortunately I can't make the dinner...in Chile on work for the next 6 weeks. Would have been great to meet everyone.
03-07-2012, 08:56 PM
Oh pleeeease this isn't going to degenerate into a how many wins have you had thread like last year is it??...if it does I think I'll chuck up
04-07-2012, 12:16 AM
Don't be phased Mike.
It's also been a while since I got a deep-sky DM nod... now with Martin back in town + his High Sierra remote...standard was always going to be stratospheric.
If you are shooting deep-sky from the 'burbs (as I do ) you are seriously pushing up-hill. So it comes down to enjoyment rather than being at the cutting edge.
It's my cheerful prognostication (the well-traveled) Phil H will surpass my total this year.
So.....need a bucket?
04-07-2012, 06:13 AM
Congratulations to everyone who won and also to those that entered and gave it a shot. Sheepishly I have to admit that I also entered one of my images but alas was unsuccessful. However should the Mayans be proved wrong then 2013 beckons for another shot at glory!!
04-07-2012, 08:37 AM
Really?...I mean, let us know how you went this year sure... but adding up all your DM wins over the years and then every year feeling the need to remind people ....t'is a bit gratuitous
04-07-2012, 08:50 AM
Only first entered in 2006 , my gear was pretty basic before that.
I wish I could go as a reckon there will be some ripper images and videos as so much has happend in the heavens this past year.
When I look at Phil`s site and all those lovely images from Alaska I know it`s gonna be good!
04-07-2012, 09:43 AM
No that was not my intention. It was speculation if Gary was to win another category and given that he has won a category all but one year since 2006 I thought it would be good odds.
04-07-2012, 10:40 AM
Hey if the media can speculate prior the Oscars, we can speculate with our Astro-Oscars. :)
Something to be proud of, rather than cringe about!
04-07-2012, 11:29 AM
I am being rather lighthearted here guys...but I juuuust think you should be a little more mindful of all those who enter every year and receive no recognition, out of respect for these individuals it's probably nice to keep the running tally of your wins and shock at not being recognised in a particluar category etc just a little more private. :)
04-07-2012, 01:14 PM
 Mate... it's a competition . Get some time under dark skies dude. Seriously. Quick. :P
04-07-2012, 01:23 PM
Anybody else from Melbourne heading up to Parkes? I'd be interested in sharing the driving if we can make mutual plans work. You can message me or call 0438 037 567.
I was hoping you had entered Colin and would have been amazed if your timelapse didn't make the cut. Pity we won't get to meet this time.. somewhere else hopefully. Is the work in Chile photography related or will you be trying to tack that on??
04-07-2012, 01:50 PM
Hey I'd love too ...got some?...with no moon though!
04-07-2012, 11:31 PM
The only comment I made was: this year Phil Hart will most likely be the most prolific CWAS/Malin award winner do date...and yes, I said the same thing last year.
Hardly gratuitous.... and by the way...well deserved Phil.
Seems you need to take a camera a bit beyond the corner shops to make the cut these days ;)
05-07-2012, 03:50 AM
thanks for the kudos Peter :).. but before you get your hopes up too high i'll let you know that my first yukon timelapse vid which you have seen got picked, but none of the images from the yukon were (although one has just been printed in international S&T, albeit too dark). and one of my images that was selected was taken from williamstown, which is not much further than 'round the corner' from hawthorn.. ;).
05-07-2012, 07:18 AM
Cheers Phil. Chile is mostly work (non photo) related, but if things pan out I'll try to take a week off at the end. Probably hit a couple of locations in the Atacama/Altiplano? There's a pretty amazing remote spot where an iceberg forms over a geizer in the winter that I'd like to try. Around 3500m, and well below freezing ... right up your alley ;)
Good luck with the awards. I reckon your Yukon timelapse will do well.
05-07-2012, 03:46 PM
Looking forward to seeing the winning entries, always gives more inspiration.
I can't make it this year after being away for the last 2 weeks but hope everyone has fun there!
05-07-2012, 04:18 PM
Going to make it for the first time since 2008. I am looking forward to cathing up with a few guys and even meeting a few. Booked in to see the conference too.
05-07-2012, 05:07 PM
Yep another loooong road trip coming up but always good to escape the city.
Mike - I anticipate seeing a few of your Kimberley images in next year's comp!
05-07-2012, 05:48 PM
Sounds like you were anointed by Malin cream again Mike?..if so, nice work
I too look forward to the results...
Oh and welcome back too
