The weather charts on http://www.weatherzone.com.au/synoptic/ and most other news sites are showing massive disparities from the BOM provided charts http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/charts/viewer/index.shtml
If you look at Sunday for both of them, Weather zone has a low sitting of the NSW coast. The BOM charts don't, instead having a massive high extending out halfway to NZ.
So I have no idea what the weathers going to be like, but am watching it closely.
Hi Narayan,
With some long range forecasts predicting sunshine for the 7th and 8th and the
BOM prediction for the 6th at present as "a few showers, partly cloudy", it will
be interesting to watch how things pan out over the next few days with regards
updated predictions.
This month has been a record dry, so hopefully the trend will statistically
continue for a bit longer.
On May 20th, there were scattered showers in Sydney. Where I had been in
the north and then in the west and been perfectly clear so I was surprised when I
heard first-hand accounts from others who had experienced showers at locations such as Bankstown.
So the scenario of "partly cloudy and scattered showers" may not necessarily be universal
disaster for Sydney-based transit observers.
You have to hand it to them though. It is amazing how the sophistication of the
models, the number of data points in the solution mesh and the speed of the
supercomputers have increased so much in the past decades that they could
even hazard a guess as to what the weather might be like a week from now.
Their guess is certainly likely to be better than mine. :)
For the seriously keen I always like to remind people that when it comes to events such as this,
that the interior of the continent of Australia is not dry desert by accident.
When in doubt, head west young man.
Years ago we put that in practice to view the Leonids, kept driving west until there were
no more clouds and found ourselves in a field outside of Nyngan. It paid off with
a wonderful clear view of this awesome spectacle whereas back toward the coast
it was overcast and the stay-at-homes missed the whole light show.

Well last transit i started at Bowen mountain and was headed to Bathurst but luckily found a spot on Bells line of road about 10 kms short of lithgow where the cloud parted and we observed almost to sunset
But this time it's too early in the morning for such shenanigans .....

Well, it is looking like horse crap in Melbourne, but what else is new
BOM says showers and cloud, and Weatherzone charts show yet more southerlies thanks to the high parking itself yet again in its wet-dream zone, the bight.
buch of filthy crap :mad2:
I'll try and hold judgement until the actual morning, but the endless days of SOLID OVERCAST lately tell me what to expect come Wednesday

newcastle looks real iffy - brisbane is an hours flight away (and back) so a quick trip north might be on the cards again?

I shall be watching the weather forecasts and cloud charts with increasing interest, as will everyone else, from now on till Tuesday evening and if the coast looks like being clouded out then I'll be packing the car and heading inland as far as needed to get a clear view.
Had a good view of the 2004 transit from the hills behind Wollongong but wont be taking any chances this time round. I missed the Leonids display that Gary mentioned by being stuck on the coast, also had 2 very young kids at home and a partner who was struggling a bit, but a few fellow club members chased the gaps in the clouds until past Orange where they watched the display from a roadside among the paddocks. Have slightly regreted that missed light show ever since.
