I am interested in getting hold of accurate translations and meanings of the Arabic names that a large number of our Stars have.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to find detailed translations without having to learn Arabic from scratch?

Thanks,
Stu.

Hi,

These are the sites I bookmarked when ratting around after this recently

Good ol' Wikipedia isn't too bad, if patchy

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_proper_names_of_stars
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Stars_with_proper_names

and

http://www.glyphweb.com/esky/stars/default.htm

lots of Arabic references:

http://www.pa.msu.edu/people/horvatin/Astronomy_Facts/star_names.htm

in fact, just Google it and you get buried in references

Cheers

Hi
Here is a suggestion that may help if you have stellarium installed.
Look in the skycultures folder and select the arabic folder. There is a lot of info here all the files are in ASCII so you can read them with a text editor.

There are star names refered to the HIP number,, constellation names etc. A wealth of info on the arabic sky

Stu,
I downloaded this book from archive.org
Star Names and their meanings, an older text but still very relevant.

Thanks Mark, Rob, Geoff, Pat, Barry and Neil. It is handy to know where you have all sourced good information from on the Arabic translations.

It looks like the original Greek names were somehow lost and the Arabic translations stuck. I have some research ahead of me.
