Hi,
I'm wanting to make a wood tripod for my 150mm f8 refractor, to go with an eq5. Is there a height above which the wobbles set in? I'm thinking of a height somewhere near 1.5-1.6 metres to the top of the tripod. The wood will be hardwood, ash or jarrah. Thoughts any one:question:
Matt.

some of the berlebach go nearly to 6", as long as the spread of the legs is wide enough i think hardwood should be fine at this height, i have a wood surveyor tripod which goes to almost 6", balancing the big frac will be fairly critical

I dont think height is a problem. Your main things will be thickness and rigidity of legs, privoting joints and cross bracing. If you sort these out and strengthen appropriately you could go 3m if it tickled your fancy.
