Wonderful footage - a full-blown twister on the surface of Sol captured by the SDO.

Thanks Chris.
Channel 7 is now showing it too.

I can imagine that most viewers would think that it is spinning that fast too because the news doesn't say that the footage is time lapse.

Fire twisters are scary enough in a bush fire (even though they are amazing to see) but imagine the power in that one!

Hi Chris,

It's amazing in a way that the more places you go, the more things appear the same.

Go to Mars, photograph the surface and there are rocks and stones just like
here, so you conclude, "rocks and stones are probably pretty universal".

Now go to the Sun and you see a twister and you conclude, "twister phenomena
are probably pretty universal". Though I prefer "willy-willy".

I was somewhat amused by the film clip, however, that whoever put it together
felt compelled to add a György Ligeti-like soundtrack with sounds like rushing wind.

Amazing images and thanks for the link to the clip!

I have wondered for a long time whether tornadoes were possible on the Sun. Also if they were what kind of power/speed would they have.

480,000km/h. :jawdrop:
Thanks for sharing, WOW

While these things look like twisters which are driven by high and low pressure zones in our atmosphere, these beasts are different entirely. What looks like a twisting motion is caused by disruptions in magnetism. The fields are changing so rapidly that the plasma has the appearance of a tornado or twister. So to use the term tornado on the Sun is once again a misrepresentation of what passes for science reporting these days. Not as sexy I suppose and what does it matter if someone thinks these are twisters? Can't let the truth get in the way of an interesting story.
