Fabulous prize Mike!!!

And given the destination, you will be in a good position to gather plenty of stunning
images for a future competition.

Personally, I think the Kimberley is the most stunning corner of Australia.
If I were King for a Day, I would declare it all World Heritage Area. It is
one of the world's most amazing places.

Once again, congratulations from Mai and I!

Congratulations - that is some shot.

Yes, Gary the Kimberley is spectacular. You don't see colors like that elsewhere. I haven't been there for over 20 years but perhaps next year during my LSL we'll get back there.

We spent the best part of a year there, mostly working in Kununurra, and got to see many of the attractions before the tourists moved in (eg we stayed at El Questro when they were only charging a couple of bucks a day to camp). Getting to places was probably harder than it is now but when you got there you tended to have the place to yourself.

Mike, it's a pity the tour doesn't include the Wolf Creek meteor crater. It's perhaps not the most spectacular looking place but for someone with your interests it would be fascinating.

Congrats on the win Mike. I can really see straight away as i opened the image
it was something great. 1st up was the skyscape and how the clouds seem to all point to a one point perspective with the bright glow of the Sun being in the
center. 2ndly there is that wave captured on the left hand side making any surfer wanting to go grab their board immediately. Then theres the headland on the right with its rough and weather beaten base with lush growth on top. And finally those rocks in the foreground look like a painting. They really stand out. What type of lens did you use for this image may i ask?

haha no pelicans! Although there were some in his shortlisted january entries :)
Unfortunately no, no family. 2 weeks with Kate at home by herself with the kids - she's not looking forward to it :)

Thanks mate - yeh I've heard that. As long as we don't talk religion :)

Thanks John - I can't wait to see the place. It's been a must-see for so long.

Thanks to everyone for your kind words - I'm still gob-smacked, speechless. It hasn't sunk in yet.

I haven't even dared to look at the itinerary yet!

hmm good point, I wonder if I can convince him to make a detour :)

Thanks Steve, I appreciate your comments.

I'd been using my 24-105, but swapped out for the Sigma 17-70mm because on the crop sensor of the 40D, the 24mm doesn't give a wide enough FOV sometimes.

Canon 40D, Sigma 17-70mm lens @ 19mm, 1/320s exposure @ f/4.5, ISO160.

Thanks again everyone!

Great photos are all about telling a story (aka capturing "the decisive moment" ), or painting with light.
I reckon you achieved both with that one.
well done, a well deserved trip. enjoy.!

Mike, while your there you can do a bit of reconnaissance for the 2028 solar eclipse! :D Nothing like thinking ahead. Maximum duration is in the central Kimberly but you will be on two roads that cross the central line close by: one on the tar halfway between the Bungles and Kunnunurra and the other on the Gibb R Road between Jacks Hole and the Drysdale R crossing. As you will observe, the weather prospects up there are better than Sydney in July!

Thanks guys, appreciate the kind words.

It's still quite surreal. I haven't started any planning yet but today I think i'll get up close with the map and start looking for some inspirational photos to plan for.

The skies will be nice and dark and I'll definitely be doing some pre-dawn photos, not just waiting for the first light of dawn :)

And what a great luck for the trip to coincide with almost New Moon around June 23rd (if I understood correctly this is the tour date)!

Thanks Greg and Alex.

I hadn't even got around to looking at the new moon dates - but hoped it happened to be during the trip.

You're right - it's from the 23rd June to 6th July.

Later in the trip, the setting crescent Moon might illuminate some landscapes at night ;)

I just caught up with this thread. Congratulations on the win Mike. Ken Duncan is a great photographer and you will learn lots from him in that short time. Have a great trip.

Thanks so much RB, Dennis and Paul.

I'm starting to get excited now. Yesterday, Kate and I went and had morning tea at the Cafe attached to the Ken Duncan Gallery at Erina Heights, and walking through his gallery, looking at some of his shots from the same area - got me really excited.

I read the itinerary (http://www.kenduncan.com/images/stories/1206_Kimberley_Expedition_Detailed_ Itinerary.pdf)in detail last night, and then did a Google Image search of some of the locations - and wow, it's going to be a stunning place.

The Bungle Bungles (1 (http://www.kenduncan.com/index.php/print?code=WAX859), 2 (http://www.kenduncan.com/index.php/print?code=WAX021)), Mitchell Falls (1 (http://www.kenduncan.com/index.php/print?code=WAX858), 2 (http://www.kenduncan.com/index.php/product?code=KDM411)), Bells Creek Falls (http://www.kenduncan.com/index.php/print?code=WAX1710), Cape Leveque, wow - so many great places.

A small group of 16 people, we'll learn so much from him. Surely they should fly us by helicopter everywhere though, instead of 4WD :)

Congratulations Mike! Wonderful image and what a fantastic recognition to have won that prize.

I can already picture some of your fantastic crescent Moon landscapes :D

iceman
13-02-2012, 08:53 AM
Thanks Terry and Kal.

The crescent Moon will be great in the first few days, and Full Moon towards the end of the trip.

And the milky way will be right overhead during June/July - going to make some great nightscapes, if I can stay awake after all the early starts and long days.

Found this last night too:
