One of our two pet rabbits finally found an ingenius way
to escape the maximum security prison of our backyard yesterday.

We noticed him missing yesterday afternoon and after reviewing the
security footage, we discovered he hopped up into the engine
bay of the car when the kids were taken to school in the morning.
My partner didn't think anything of an offhand comment from another
school mum about a rabbit seen wandering around the school car park
Friday morning:rolleyes:

Smokey 'Steve McQueen' is shown below in two earlier file photos/ mugshots.

Oh no! We had a couple of rabbits up until about a year ago, one of them passed away while the other, funnily enough also named Smokey - escaped. The escapee was kept in an enclosure very similar to yours with wire on the ground to stop it from burrowing out, but we had shade cloth over half the enclosure to shade it from the sun - we figure our Smokey somehow got onto the shade cloth and made his way to freedom :(

Adam,
those pics are quite old, they have had the freedom of the whole yard
for many months now, a far better quality of life than a constantly moving
grass run/ hutch was.
Bill and Smokey were reared from babies so we are quite attached to them
and they are still very tame. This morning my daughter and I have done
a letterbox drop in the area and put up a notice in the 2 nearby Vet surgeries,
just in case someone managed to nab him.
I don't hold much hope though. My daughter is quite upset.
The only thing that brightens her mood is his funny method of escape. :)

Well, here's hoping you can find that pesky varmant :) We had our Smokey for about 5 years and he was a stray passed down to us but my daughter was still quite upset when he flew off, so know exactly what it's like :(

god i am almost embarassed to even talk about this as i am not a real animal lover because i am highly allergic to pet saliva, anyhow we have a "free range" bunny that has the run of the whole backyard
the rabbit in question is a viscious little monster and highly territitorial called betty
it likes to bight your feet, and once when i was fed up with it i gave it a "flick" with my foot and it tumbled backward a couple of metres...... well that was a mistake! it launched itself at me and with a quick snap of its neck sliced the top of my foot open
we have since made friends and joins me observing outside
my father inlaw, a very witty irishman started to call her "bet nibbler" and "atilla the bun"
she really is the rabbit off "the holy grail"
"watch it sir..... that rabbits dynamite!

He's back!

We got him!
School groundskeeper caught him mid morning, Friday in the school
car park.
He asked a few people across the road if they had lost a rabbit.
One said they would look after him. That person gave him to a friend
who had young kids.
We eventually got that person's details and they were decent enough
to offer to give him back!
Daughter is over the moon.:D
Some re-union shots from last night.

I am glad that all is well and that your pet still has its fur.

Years ago my wife had a cat that decided to crawl into the engine bay of our car. When the engine was started for the drive to work, the cat was caught in the belts and lost about 40% of its fur and skin. Surprisingly the cat survived. Our Vet said it had used up it's nine lives. It took a while for the skin to heal.

So I suppose it's true, there is more than one way to skin a cat.

Well I have to be honest and say I'm attached to em a bit myself.
I'm the first to give them a pat and a bit of food as I go to work,
while the whole house is still asleep. I did miss the little bloke.
Bill, his mate was fretting too, he was off his food and spent the weekend
sniffing all his mates droppings..probably saying 'well that's not a fresh one,
or that one, or that one...where the hell is my brother"
He perked up as soon as he saw his mate.

What stress you'll must have endured
I'm so glad this story has a happy ending.
I want a rabbit bu we're not allowed to own them here in Brisbane. :mad2:

Nearly the same thing happened to me some 20 years ago.
In a hurry to get to work, into my Torana I get. Half way down the street I notice my cat still sleeping on my bonnet :eyepop:. Screeeeeeech went the brakes, did a U turn, drove back home - yes cat still on bonnet :eyepop: shoved cat OFF and then lead footed the accelerator to work as now I'm running even later :lol: I really am a cat lover, I really am.:D

Then a few years after that, I was reversing said Torana down the driveway, I heard my little King Charles Spaniel "YELP". "Uhhh-oooh that doesn't sound good". Now I'm already in hurry to pick child up from school- very young child at the time- I looked out- dog walks away. "Phew". So I kept going (betcha didn't see that coming did ya :P ), sped to pick up child from school and back home within 15mins to tend to said dog. Takes dog to vet. And here's the weird thing- it turns out my tire ran over his leg and I didn't break his bone but tore the tendon. Patched up the dog and he was fine. The vet told me "it happens all the time" - owners running over their dog and to not feel bad. Okay so I'm not a dog lover I'll admit it, but I didn't do it on purpose, honest I didn't. :P

My family will never let me forget that story  but when you have a young child just starting school and crying everyday you take her to school and scared, I couldn't stress her out by being late, and I knew the dog could wait the 15 mins as he only walked away with a limp.
BTW- that silly dog never learned his lesson, he was back behind my car in no time at all. He used to like to chase the car out :screwy: and the only reason I hit him that time was because I oversteared the driveway and made a correction - which the dog hadn't accounted for.

P.S. Please, I beg you, no hate mail from animal lovers/lobbyists. :violin:
