This would be a fun project to prepare while we wait for clear skies:

Bigpond News:

Youtube Video:

I have had a quick look at the video at it looks to be genuine. Similar efforts have been made in the past by others. Maybe Ice In Space Members could fund, build and launch a balloon that would put the others to shame? I would be willing to donate money to the project.

Thanks Stu,
:2thumbs:
But don't let Worksafe get a hold of it. No helmet, no safety vest, no harness. Not to mention oxygen mask and pressure suit.

It got a writeup in today's Sun Herald.

I liked the bit about how they waited until they had southerly winds so it wouldn't cross the border and wind up in the USA. That meant there would be no hassles from the Department of Homeland Insecurity.

Already ~1,300,000 hits on youtube

That's awesome! I wonder if they glued the pieces together? You'd hate to see it go half way up only to come apart!

CASA Regulations would prohibit such an endeavor or the red tape for approval would be endless.

This Lego Man probably broke Canadian air space regulations. I assume that all previous amateur balloon launches have been deployed without approval.

The Australian Defence Force and Civilian Meteorologists use weather balloons to gather MET data. Do these balloons fall under CASA's authority? What altitude is achieved by a standard weather balloon before it bursts?

Time to do some research!

Apparently 24 k's or 80000 feet up on this occasion.
And yes, I would think weather balloons would be of interest to CASA. If it is in a flight path of a plane ........not a good thing.....
I think what they might have done is check flight paths, timings etc before they launch.

I would suggest remote areas ( even though that might make recovery of the project difficult) such as Alice Springs, Kalgoorlie, areas in SA, Qld and maybe ( if we could convince them ) Antarctica!
Just a few thoughts...

PS. even though we have a kazillion flights a day, the airspace is quite devoid of aircraft ( unless you live in Europe or the US:lol:). Similar to the ISS....lotsa debris out there yet they manage to evade destruction....

I belive CASR 101 may hold the answer.

Thanks for the link Stu

That was really cool, if it was for a science project I hope they got A++ for it.
