Can someone please reccommend an AC PSU to use with a Losmandy G11G - it has the Maxxon motors fitted.

I was using a regulated, transformer style 13.8V DC PS from Jaycar, I choose this on the basis that the output would be smoother than the switched mode type. Unfortunately it turned out to be faulty, and as a result, blew my SBig ST2000xm pcb. All is fixed up now but my only other PS is 12V/3A and not grunty enough to drive the G11G, so I am looking for a make/model that is known to work.

I think Martin (Mill) has the same mount, so try PM him if he doesn't see this post.

The actual Gemini power supply (http://www.losmandy.com/access.html)from Losmandy is regulated 15VDC @ 4.3 amps and only $79 (plus postage and waiting times which can be a deal breaker).

Which Jaycar one did you have John? The MP3098 (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=MP3098&form=CAT2&SUBCATID=999#12) seems to be reasonably popular, but I notice that under no load mine floats at about 23V. Add a bit of load and it regulates properly to 13.8V

It was this one:

http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=MP3096&form=CAT2&SUBCATID=999#12

And yes it put out a PD of 13.8V beteween the poles BUT the problem was the PD between the -ve of this unit and the -ve of the ST2000xm and laptop. This was 25V.

That is a new model and is a lower price than the last time I looked, thanks!

Thanks!

Just make sure you test it before use. I am not an electrical engineer but if I understand it right and the frame ground is floating you might be in trouble. This setup is common in Lab power supplies apparently. For astro use where you have multiple PSUs and voltages around and interconnected (ie Laptop, ccd, focuser, fwheel, usb etc) I think you need to be very careful of floating ground PSUs.

i have the losmandy g11 with the gemini 2 goto. I use a 5 amp power supply and ive never had power issues. Thats with a C14 ota and maxxon motors.

Glad to hear it - which make/model of PSU do you have?

John, this is an quote from the PDF Manual on Jaycar website. Its listed as a Caution.

So presumably its grounded correctly. The extension cord I use is on a Real and there are four power points on this Reel. So All my power will be grounded from this single AC source all using grounded AC plugs.
