I don't think any of us are going to be around for its return...won't be back here till 2677!!!:)

Not unless they figure out how to make us all live a hell of a lot longer in the next few years :)

You may still catch it Brian, or are you still clouded in up there?

I got up at 5.15 on Wednesday morning to try and catch a look and had clear skies. Unfortunately when I got to a relatively dark and flat site there was too much light from the sun on the horizon to see anything other than bright stars; even with my binoculars. Of course the next morning was cloudy so I've accepted that this one's gotten away. I'm not even sure we can see it from up here anyway.

Gino...you need to be at your observing site at 2:30am at the latest, to catch the comet. You'll be able to see it from Darwin:)

Thanks Carl, you've given me some hope. There's a good chance I'll still be up at 2.30am tonight ;) I just hope the clouds stay away.

Hi Brian,

There is good and bad news.

The bad news is that this comet is quickly fading and won't be back for a very long time (800 years approx).

The good news is that it could be the start of another cluster of brighter Kreutz sungrazing comets. There was a bright cluster that appeared 1880-1887, and another 1963-1970. So perhaps there is another 1 or 2 (or more) of these comets in the next decade or so. Lets hope :)

Terry

Rapidly fading and a 40% moon about doesn't bode well for catching a glimpse tonight. :(
