Murray Comet/Torpedo

Someone was giving this beautiful toy as the right fron wheel was buckled. I took it home and spent a couple of hours pulling out the front section, bent the retaining wall back and re-wrapped the axle. Then a quick re-grease and re-assemble.
This is a Murray Torpedo (with vent holes), which is based on the Comet (show on the website below). The pedal car is modelled on an late 40s and early 50s Buick.

In prestine condition these are worth a packet, what a present they'd be to give a son or grandson of suitable age

Thanks Trevor, this is for my 3 yo son. The 6 yo already has a new bike. I may trim a couple of old bike tyres and use them as wrap around bumpers for the car to protect it from excessive scratches etc. But it is a toy, even I am tempted to ride in it!

Just to give you an idea at auction a prestine original could fetch $2000-3000, reproduction pedal cars of any quality sell these days for $300-1000 and most are probably made in China at a guess.

Wow, I had no idea. Maybe I should sell it to get some astro gear :D
Nah, sometimes kids are more important, just sometimes :lol:
I need to check it out more tonight. I know it's heavy, stamped steel construction, can't find any stamped date or country of origin.

Excellent Bo, your son will love that.

As a kid in the 60's I had one of them except that it was modelled on the American army jeep.

I still remember it as one of favourite toys.

Ric my thoughts when I saw the post, in the early 60's I shared a fire engine with my brothers, how many of these beauties alas ended up on a tip.
