Nicely done big boy...

Congrats to all the other winners

Well done those that put in a big effort but didn't get that big recognition, but still got into the final selection process.

You all do such beautiful work, it's well deserved. :)

Thanks guys, Well I got the email from Mike this morning and took a look and am shocked to see that I am the highest placed Australian. Although it is good to see so many Aussies in the field and glad to see I picked the overall winning entry. Mike you owe some beers.:)

Interestingly my run of coming second has not been changed.:P

Congrats to Mike, Steve and Peter on the wins. All beautiful images.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words and congratulations to the other winners. I must admit I never expected this image to go anywhere. I didn't even enter it in the Malin awards.

Cheers

Nice to see a number of Aussies in the final mix.

Well done guys, particularly Steve Crouch who will enter more of his efforts in the Malins next year :poke:eh?? :)

Sadly the exhibtion wasn't ready when I was up in London last week, but I promise to take some piccys of all the Oz entrants work if I can get back there before it closes.

Damian Peach's winning Jupiter image is well deserved... Details and srtucture on Jupiter *and* its moons of the like I've never seen before, other than from Hubble.

Just to clarify, I did enter a montage of planetaries of which Shapley 1 was one in the Malins but it didn't get beyond first base. Clearly I might have been better off just entering the single Shapley 1 image.

Fair 'nuff, in any event I've always rated your low-fanfare images as amongst the best in Oz

Now, can anyone do something about this lousy east coast weather??? :rain:

Thanks for the positive comments and well wishes guys, they are nice to read.

Like any competition of this type, getting an award does not the imager make. I had several favorites of my own (by other imagers) in the pool and a couple I thought for sure would catch the judges eye.

However, knowing that a group of people, all of whom are in the astronomy research, outreach and journalism games, on the other side of the globe, in the mother of modern observatories, collectively picked out my image from a pool of 700 bloody amazing images from around the World....is the quirky (lucky) and rather cool bit but it certainly doesn't make me a better imager than anyone else, it is all fun

What a collection though, anyone who hasn't had a look at the full entry pool (http://www.flickr.com/search/groups/?w=973956%40N23&m=pool&q=competition%3Aastrophoto%3D2011) should, just to see some beautiful work, some are very emotive and moving.

Cheers heaps again

Mike

Hi Mike, noticed this thread only now. Thanks for the kind words! My compliments too to you and Peter, Paul and Steve for the great pictures that got through the final. As you said it is great to have 4 aussies (and an adopted half :P) that were selected, that means that not only this is a land of dark skies but also a land of talented people

While we would like to take some of the kudos because you do some from Australian skies :D...your work is World class Marco so it was no surprise that it was so highly regarded in the judging.

Well done and we all look forward to your next masterpiece

Mike
