Pat on the back got an email this morning that partly read

"Hello, and congratulations from the Royal Observatory, Greenwich!

Your photo has been shortlisted in the Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2011 competition. To progress to the next round, we now need you to complete these three simple steps before 3 August 2011"

hey!! I don't care if I am finally picked or win anything, just being shortlisted is a nice shot in the arm, happy chappy for Saturday after a week trying to get over a cold and cloudy ****e weather for the last month and a half it's the pick me up I needed. Thanks also go to all on IIS who have giving me support and encouragement etc etc

One I did back in April of NGC-5139 which was well received on a number of forums

congrats to Peter and Marcus, my effort pales in comparison to their work

didn't expect it as a first timer, in fact didn't think the image would be good enough to even be shortlisted

When I went to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich in October 2010 I had a good look at the exhibition for that year. I was sure I recognised something like 2/3 of the names from IIS. Had to laugh to myself .. IIS members taking over the astrophotography world :)

I came home from QLD Astrofest to find an email awaiting me as well. :D

With 2078 people submitting over 5000 entries, it's certainly a great honour to come this far. The quality of the images is superb.
Congratulations to all who have been shortlisted, and the best of luck in the next round.

Well done to all who got shortlisted.

And yes Trevor I think it's the west's turn for our equivalent of the "La Nina" which has presented us with virtually no opportunity since last full moon. Now I am starting to understand all those frustrated over east 6 months ago with the rain!!

I was talking to Pete Lawrence last night.
He was saying how he was going in to ROG for the judging. I asked how many rounds to go and his reply was.....
"Tomorrow is it Jeanette - at the end of the day we'll know who the winners are."
Good Luck everyone!!!

Looks like judging has taken place, but I would imagine that no one will know for some time yet. Like JJJ said the official announcement is 9 Sept. which is a long time away yet.

If you have won something you would probably know by now

Daily Tele UK (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/picture-galleries/8688878/The-2011-Astronomy-Photographer-of-the-Year-competition.html)

CNN (http://edition.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/europe/08/11/astronomy.space.pictures.greenwich/index.html?&hpt=hp_c2)

Newsshopper (http://www.newsshopper.co.uk/freetime/latest/9183792.Stunning_stellar_snaps_in_R oyal_Observatory_s_annual_photograp hy_competition/)

Metro (http://www.metro.co.uk/news/871683-photography-competition-entrants-have-stars-in-their-eyes)

London Science Festival (http://www.londonsciencefestival.com/the-astronomy-photographer-of-the-year-2011-competition-is-now-open/)

Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/gallery/2011/aug/12/astronomy-photographer-year-2011-shortlist?CMP=twt_fd#/)

Looking at the entries submitted (over 700!) and with 10 judges (http://www.nmm.ac.uk/visit/exhibitions/astronomy-photographer-of-the-year/competition/judges/) on the panel I think Aussies may well feature strongly in the finals - good luck everyone!

I'm suspecting now that everyone on the shortlist got an invite. We can't all have won...

Certainly adds to the suspense though :)

TrevorW

I think so too Eddie I'm sure guys in US would be in similar boat as us but the organisers will want the numbers attending to make the event more prestigeous no doubt
