After much deliberation I went out and purchased a UPS yesterday to take to Astrofest. I went for a Cyberpower 2200 Va 1300W system as I wanted something that would survive a number of (3-4) 15 minute outages in a night. This unit has two 9Ahr 12 V batteries and is the largest I could find in the home user range.

I've tested it with everything running this morning and I'm pleased to see it will run all my gear for about 70 mins on battery. If I leave the dew heaters and laptop out I get about 100 minutes.

The main things I wanted to protect and keep running were the imaging (QHY8pro) and guiding (DSI IIpro) cameras and the mount alignment. It claims a 5ms cuttover time and the QHY8 and DSI kept ticking along imaging happily today when I pulled the mains power.

This unit has an LCD display that indicates battery charge, load % and estimated run time. It can also connect to the pc for remote monitoring. Seems good so far.:thumbsup:

All the best with your setup Peter - sounds like you should be able to ride out the inevitable outages. When the power does go out, I'm sure there will be enough beeping from all the newly purchased UPSs that it will wake the dead! Hopefully hairdryers, electric blankets and fan heaters will be banned to avoid overloading the circuits.

I spent Thursday & Friday nights imaging at Leyburn. On Friday night I was able to run the mount, CCD camera, laptop & dew heaters flat out from 6:30pm til 3am from 12V batteries alone. It was -0.5degrees when I went to bed at 3am - only stopped imaging because the moon was rising.

if you can open up the unit without voiding the warranty you can most probably place and double sided sticky tape over the beeper.

Umart in Milton has the same units (same price) but none in stock at the moment. I think they were expecting some this week.
