I got mine done by Peter Tan in HK.
Great service, very cheap - cost me around $240 (couple of years ago) for postage/insurance/replacement filter/labour. Can't recommend him highly enough.
You really may have to go O/S but it's not as much of a drama as one might imagine.

Gary, I heard that his mail box has a limit and if your mail comes in when it's over that limit it is deleted. As a PC guy that sounds odd but it is china so who knows? Last time I talked to him he was swamped with email.

Gary, I believe Peter Lee has some mail issues. You need to send him emails as plain Text and he will get it no problems. I have been dealing with him in the last 2 weeks without problems.

Peter tan has replied to all of my emails, however i'm having difficulty understanding his replies.
All i want to know is what filter do i order if i want a UV/IR replacement and what filter do i order if i want clear glass for my canon 500d
and does he test the cameras after he has made the moddification.

I just wish there were a few more places in Australia

The best way to understand Peter is to tell him you want to get your 500D astro-modded then let him commit as to which Baader filter is the correct one for your model - that way if it does not turn out correct the onus of responsibility is not yours but his since he committed as to which is the "suitable" filter

I believe Eric of EzyStyles stopped doing this after he got married and got too busy so HK's Peter is your best bet now

If you're in Perth I could point you to someone who does repair/warranty work for Canon but he is difficult to get to do stuff your way; it's his way or the highway!!

I don't think clear glass is the way to go for astro stuff. You would normally do clear glass if you wanted an IR camera. IR will throw your astro photos out of focus. Here is a blurb on modding a 450D (http://ghonis2.ho8.com/rebelmod450d13.html), you might get something from it.

Hi Robin
You can use a clear filter modded DSLR for astro photography. All you do is add the filters you require in the form of clip in or external mount filter. For example if you add a UV/IR filter you not only reduce star blooming caused by the moddification but you also are able to focus.
Having clear filter replacement means you now have a full spectrum camera.

Hi Doug,
annoyed to the bitter end I am, I was his biggest fan too, but of late the inability even receive a response has caused me throw all of my toys out at once.
Plain Text? I use Mac mail, and assumed it was as plain as possible. I even tried via my GMail account, same deal, nothing. In the end I have struck up a working relationship with a couple of friendly astro dealers in the US, and a couple in China, and have been as happy as.

Hi Carl,

I have had 2 Canon cameras ( a 1000d and a friend's 20d) modded by Unique Camera Repairs at West Pennant Hills in Sydney.

We supplied the replacement filters. We bought them from My Astro Shop in Queensland. It took a couple of days for the work to be done. This was a year ago and the cameras are still working successfully with excellent results.
