Time for another censis :)

Not what scope do you own, but which that you own gets the most use ?

If you own multiple scopes, perhaps give a reason why you use one over the other?

1 scope, 1 choice :)

Though I do own binoculars, they don't see a lot of use atm.

I voted dob but also own an ed80 refractor which gets little use for the reason that its small aperture doesnt do enough to satisfy me.

G'day Y'all
bushfires came to within 20mts. from my observatory and 50 mts from my home.
If not for the fearless fire fighters :prey2: and a huge grader ploughing thrugh my property all would have been lost.

back to issue at hand :- I also own an ed80 refractor which is mounted
on top of the 8" the SCT with the DSI Pro hanging on for dear life.

4" Genesis on TV Systems mount with GM8 controller, so easy to use and set -up. The big dobbies on "special " occasions.

Robert, I hope you and your loved ones (be they Cassegrains, Newts or refractors) stay safe.

8" Dob does the trick for me. My ED80 got sold because, like Geoff says, not quite enough aperture.

I'm confused. Does a 12" dob fit in the small dob <12.5" category or in the large dob >12" category?

Or both?

astrogeek

12" is not bigger than 12" so it's not the 12">, should go in the <12.5"

Geoff your dob sizes make no sence....hahahaha

I can see why the 12" dobbers are confused.

Go the SCT.

Makes perfect sense if you understand the < & > mathematical operators for "less than" and "greater than" respectively. The only people in no-mans land are those with a mirror somewhere between 12 and 12.5 inches

My intention was seperate out smaller tube dobs up to 12" from the larger dob types, which generally start at 12.5" and up.

Got off on a technicality Geoff. Sneaky, but "not guilty".

Refractors for me until I decide to like faint fuzzy things.
Wish I had that 4" TV genesis, but I've been told personally that it's not for sale.
umm... I need a second job.

The way I read it says.

<12.5 meaning dobs less the 12.5"
>12 meaning dobs larger then 12"

This sounds a bit back the front to me.....

Maybe phrased Dobs 12.5" and larger and Dobs less then 12.5"

I dont mind...I'm just glad I dont own a Dob.....lol

Sorry for being picky....I just have a bit of a facination no call it a fetish for numbers...hehe

Cobbers,

I use my two Refractors the most. The 80mm is mounted on a sturdy photo tripod, can be taken out with one hand, has almost no cool down time and is great for wide fields. I use it instead of binoculars.

The 120mm refractor is my favorite scope, great on nebulae

The 250mm Dob,only use it when I'm going deep

I have a TAL-1 and the 8" motodob but use the 8" motodob because i see more with it.

I am rather dependent upon my SCT with its "buzzes and clicks" (Froggy terminology).

3 scopes, two are SCT. One for sale and in storage, the other two are SCT and refractor. The refractor gets used sometimes. Only one SCT gets used. Only when the weather permits.

Only one little 10" dob. My baby. Used when conditions allow. :D L.

G'day all,

Lucky chap Robert, I am 300km west of Adelaide on Eyre peninsula and smoke is everywhere from the Grampian fires.

Anyway back to subject; currently use 16" newtonian EQ mount with 8" SCT piggyback. Waiting for 14"SCT Meade that will replace both telescopes.

Its a close tie between binocs and 10" dob. goes like this- Binocs, to finder to EP for me. Skies here arent to bad for pollution.

My 12.5 inch Discovery truss gets the most use now...but the 8 is still fun to play with quickly in the backyard...it stays on a hand trolley I got from Bunnings and is quite easy and fast to get in and out of the house...

I use the Larger dob ( 12.5" ) myself more than the smaller dob (12") but the smaller dob gets more use overall :)

My big dob - not only does it out perform the other two in every respect bar tracking, but it is easier and quicker to set up and align.

Trundle it out, take the covers of, switch on the cooling fan, go get a beer whilst it cools down, two star align sighting through the telrad and away I go. Simple as.

The ETX takes a couple of hours to cool and the newt is as heavy as blinkin' flip.

I use my little 3&half inchBorge refractor the most, as it is easy to set up and a joy to use.

My big LX200 is the best too use, but being a monster and weighing in over 60kg with tripod and all, it's not a quick-set up and go thing...
If I want to pop out to dark skies and just oggle the universe, then out comes the 6inch refractor... easy to put into a car and quick to assemble, but still gives great deep sky views etc...

but once the dome or roll-off shed is up and going, the LX 200 will do many hours and catch up fast.

I use the 16" the most , just roll it out with the wheelbarrow wheels onto the concrete pad at about sundown ,go and have a beer and a meal then out to do some observing.
The 8" SCT might get greater use in the future due to the recent gift of a LPI. :stargaze: :astron:

I use the Dob all the time.
The refractor lives in the laundry shed and is used to dry socks on.
